Season's Greetings 2016

Thank you for being guests at Arowhon Pines last summer. We appreciate that a large number of you have already booked for next year! Perhaps it was the glorious weather, Friday night’s venison with risotto or the renovated rooms and new décor that are bringing you back. Or was it just that small yellow post-it note (handwritten with Sharpie pen stuck on the front counter) with the simple message “Have you booked for 2017?” If it was, kudos to our marketing department for that brilliancy! Whatever the reason, thank you again and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2017!

June in Algonquin Writing Retreat

Friday, June 2 – Sunday, June 4, 2017
Or add an extra day and extend your retreat to Monday, June 5

Give yourself a weekend of writing time – a weekend of instruction, inspiration and creativity. Award yourself with time away from distractions, with no dishes to do and wonderful food at every  meal, as you sit with your feet up and write in the most beautiful wilderness setting in Ontario. This is where the Group of Seven got its inspiration (Tom Thompson is buried just a couple of lakes over); it’s a wonderful place for you to find your inspiration, too.

Four-Year Wedding Anniversary

"These aren’t that old, but thought you’d enjoy them nonetheless. We just celebrated our four year wedding anniversary this past week (September 8th) and have fond memories of our wedding despite the rain… and the lack of hydro.

Hope you had a great summer. We enjoyed our time at the cottage next door on Canoe Lake and we can’t believe that another season is coming to a close. Next weekend will be our last trip north for 2016. The season is just far too short!

Until next year!" -- Lisa & Simon, Elliot & Thomas

Remembering Arowhon...from Japan

"This picture was taken on 26th September 2004. As you figure out, this is the lake in front of your Arowhon Pines. Twelve years have passed since we stayed…. All the days our staying, we wrapped in the most perfect happiness. We would love to come back to see you all and our unforgettable splendid memories…."

With love,
Miki IMAI (Ms.) from Tokyo, JAPAN

Early Morning Memories

"Here are a few memories of many wonderful vacations at Arowhon. The early morning is the best time to see and be on the lake and many times we have navigated back in the mist by following the smell of breakfast!" -- Michael Cook

A Picture Paints a Thousand Memories...

"I am a prior Camper and Counsellor at Camp Arowhon in the 70's. My brother Mike headed the sailing dock. Over the years my family will occasionally get together at Arowhon Pines. Here is a painting my sister Shari Orenstein made of one of these visits." -- Dr. Teddi Orenstein Lyall

30 Seasons...and Counting!

"It was meant to be a “one-off”- a child-free weekend escape from our busy city lives. The year was 1987 and it was our first venture into Algonquin Park where we were booked to stay at Arowhon Pines. We had been hearing about the renowned lodge for years and were looking forward to our stay. We loved every moment of that first visit: the park, the hiking, the food, the rustic luxury, the wilderness. Did I mention the food? After the first day, we were plotting our return and how we could become one of the numerous couples we met on that visit who had been coming for 18, 20, even 25 years..." -- Brian and Annalee

Fond Memories

"It's not that old but every time I look at this, it takes me back to the early a.m. when I snapped it. Spent about an hour exploring the grounds. I am not a pro, just a point and shoot girl who loves natural light. The mist eventually lifted. The morning light was exceptional. Fondly remember yellow canoes lined up lakeside. Paddles in a barrel? Have been to Arowhon over the years, more recently with Mark Hudson, arts writer UK and Ontario Parks media tour in 2015. Through industry work, I travel Canada often and I experience a lot of what it offers visitors. I think Arowhon Pines is what every traveler imagines Canada to be. You can't help but feel good being there." -- Judy

The Perils of Being Married to a Writer

"It’s the remoteness, the quiet, the space – mental, physical, emotional – that makes you feel like writing. So after lunch one day, I told Arnie that I was going to sit on the covered dining hall verandah that overlooks the lake, and work on my new novel. He said he was going to take one of the two small Hobies out for a sail: he’d done that the afternoon before, and he’d enjoyed it. Today the lake was a bit rougher and it looked like rain, and I told him to be careful. 'I'm too young to be a widow', I said, giving him a kiss goodbye. I assured him I’d keep my eye on him." -- M. W. Walters

The Simon Family

The Simon family dug up cheques payable to Arowhon Pines for their deposit… and payment for their visit here in 1977!  Although the rates may have increased (yikes!), the Simon’s come every July...

Calling All Guests!!!!

We love ALL our guests, but there’s a special place in our hearts for those of you who have been coming for decades. You notice every little change that we make.  There are Arowhon stories from the past.  Your kids grow and no longer order the chicken fingers and fries!  Soon, we meet the boyfriends and girlfriends, (some of whom only make it here once), then the spouses, and then the most important next generation of Arowhon guests!

We thought it would be fun to call on all our guests to send us your memories from the past - a copy of an invoice or receipt, an old photo from your vacation here, a matchbook or pen, an old brochure – anything from your stay at Arowhon from years gone by. Of course like most things - the older, the better!

We would happily post your photos and treasure your information and keep it for our records forever!

Love Theresa, David, Adam, Edward – long time staff at Arowhon

The Skoczylas family, summer 2012, who have been coming to Arowhon since the 1980s!

Mary Kelly sent us a lovely photo of Helen from the past……

Does anyone else have a photo from the past from their time at Arowhon that they would like to share?

We would love to hear from you!

Enter Algonquin Outfitters' Paddle Art Contest

Algonquin Outfitters is hoping to have 100 paddles created for Tom Thomson’s 100th anniversary (did you know that Tom’s paddle was never found?).

To enter the contest all you have to do is visit an Algonquin Outfitters store (paddles will eventually be available at all of our stores but right now they are already available in Huntsville and Oxtongue lake.) There’s a $25 entry fee which includes either an unfinished paddle blank or a rough paddle blank (for carving).

It’s your job to create something unique. It’s not limited to painting, you could burn an image or design into the paddle, or carve it into something unique it’s totally up to you!

Bird’s Eye View

We were very apprehensive about permitting some guests to fly their small drone at Arowhon Pines.

We decided to pick a quiet 15 minutes before dinner one early June night (with not so many guests in house) to let it fly.

The photos and video that were recorded were jaw dropping!  It’s amazing to see the resort from a bird’s eye view.

Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. David Honey!

We’re almost ready to welcome you!
Hope you can visit this summer!

And the Winner of a 2016 Spring Arowhon Weekend for Two is…

Congratulations to Brigitte K who correctly identified our nature photographs and won a free spring weekend for two at Arowhon Pines!

Please note that the Arowhon Managers are not scientists but we are nice - so if your answers were close enough, we accepted it and put you in the draw!  For example:  #10 is Three Leaved Solomon’s Seal, but we also accepted Canadian / Wild / Lily of the Valley.  And #2 Shield Lichen was difficult so we accepted quite a few lichen names that looked pretty close!

GREAT JOB EVERYONE!  We especially liked Brian in Ottawa who felt that those people who could not name anything should also be in the draw so that they come up to Arowhon and learn about nature!
