Autumn in Algonquin

Although we’ve been experiencing summer-like temperatures all week – a few of us are still out swimming daily (water temperature is 18 degrees) – we know that the chillier weather is in the forecast.

Soon, the dining room fire will be lit every meal to welcome guests.   The bellmen will spend much of the day replenishing wood in the cabins and splitting wood for kindling.  The chef will be pondering the Thanksgiving Weekend menu.  Our bathing suits and sandals will be packed away for another season.  And guests will try to decide where best to see the magnificent changing colours of the leaves, by canoe or on a trail?

We look forward to welcoming autumn (and you!) to Algonquin Park.

Last Weekend of Summer 2015

It is the last week of summer with hot and sunny weather in the forecast.  Thank you to all our summer guests who enjoyed swimming in the lake, canoeing, hiking, the moose, the food and the new renovated rooms.

Sunflowers and Shorelines

Sunflowers and Shorelines is an exhibition of pottery and paintings by artists and sisters Karen Gray and Jane Gray.

Karen's functional carved pottery graphically interprets cottage country images including canoes and sunflowers.  Jane's oil paintings are based on her experiences of the moonlit skies and shorelines of Algonquin Park.

Brian Henry has been a book editor and creative writing instructor for more than 25 years. He publishes Quick Brown Fox, Canada’s most popular blog for writers.  He also teaches creative writing at Ryerson University and has led workshops across the US and Canada. His proudest boast is that he has helped many of his students get their first book published and launch their careers as authors.

The retreat will feature both instruction and guided writing exercises, plus one-on-one critiquing and coaching from Brian.  You’ll also have lots of time to relax, rejuvenate, reconnect with your creativity – as well as eat wonderful meals, canoe and hike.

Everyone is welcome – from those interested in developing their writing skills, aspiring writers or accomplished authors, to those who simply enjoy writing as a hobby. There is no requirement for you to have been previously published or even to have an intention to publish.  P.S. If you have an on-going writing project, bring it with you! If you’re not currently working on anything, don’t worry, we’ll get you writing.

New Date for Annual August Barbeque

It is soon time for Arowhon’s 5th Annual Civic Holiday Weekend Barbecue – there are still some chairs available by the lake.

This is when our team of cooks, headed by our chef, David Cooke, step outside for the afternoon and cook up a feast using local products from within 100 miles. Guests can meet the farmers and suppliers, enjoy some local art and music and tag some monarch butterflies before they head south.

This year’s date is SUNDAY, AUGUST 2nd, 2015!

A Rare Find

Last summer, Arowhon Pines held a Moth Workshop led by Jason J. Dombroskie, Ph.D., Collection Manager, Cornell University Insect Collection & Coordinator of the Insect Diagnostic Lab, Cornell University.  Jason's extensive knowledge and enthusiasm were contagious and all of us “caught the bug".

Last September, long time guests Ann and Brian Gray noticed a pinkish moth near a light at Arowhon.  After much research, they could not get a perfect match or identification.  The Grays, who have been volunteer naturalists in the Leslie Street Spit area in Toronto for the last 17 years, contacted Jason for help.

Turns out, their find is very rare... CLICK HERE to identify it!

Arowhon Pines - Open for the Season!

Welcome to summer! 

The canoes are in place, the sailboats rigged and the trails are being cleared.  The beds are made and everything is spotlessly clean.  There is some last minute painting to do this morning.  The kitchen has tested some new and interesting dishes, ready for your enjoyment.  The fire is burning in the dining room.  The maintenance staff who have worked late every night are ready for a little rest. We’re welcoming new friendly staff every day from Canada and around the world. 

We’re very excited to show you what we’ve been up to all winter long – gorgeous, renovated rooms and a new addition to the kitchen.  The usual things will remain as magnificent as ever – good, tasty food in a beautiful dining room, a warm welcome from the office and the timeless beauty of Algonquin Park any time of the year.

The Loon in Algonquin Park

The Common Loon is the iconic symbol of Algonquin Park.  Even if you don’t see one, you’ll hear their incredible sounds every night on Little Joe Lake.  The HOOT, TREMOLO, YODEL and WAIL are used to communicate different messages.

The loons arrived on Little Joe Lake a few weeks ago when the ice wasn’t even out yet. Word must be out that there are nice people here, and the food is good!  We say, welcome back!

Chocolate Love

In April, we signed up our baker, Heather Mordue, for some hands-on training with some master chocolatiers in northern Italy - in Torino, the capital of the Piemonte region, and on the shores of Lake Como. We’re anxious and excited to see what comes from her studies – we’ll be testing them this spring! (Well, someone has to do it!). READ ABOUT Heather’s course and travels…

Spring Has Returned!

What a difference a week makes!  All the ice is finally out (April 29), the sun is warm, there are buds on the trees and the loons are back.  The ferns and fiddleheads are popping.

This year we open for lunch on Friday, May 29th! We’re eager to show you what we’ve been up to all winter long.  Have you booked your room by the lake?  Spring rates are $ 210 per person per night (double occupancy) inclusive of three meals per day and all facilities, up to June 25.

In the spring, the wildlife viewing is best and for most of the time, you’ll have the trails and lakes to yourselves.  Hope to see you soon!

Meet Artist Eleanor Himel

Meet Eleanor Himel from Port Washington, New York.

Her statement:
The moods and colors of the ocean beaches and bays of Long Island have been a constant source of inspiration. Memories of watching waves cascading onto the shore and then receding are entwined with the scent of salt water and the carefree joy of a dash into the surf. The emotional essence of each locale is reflected in contrasting layers of bright paint.

Time spent in Japan gave me an appreciation for the simplified design that is indigenous to that country. It has affected the way I look at art, architecture and fashion as well.

The parklands of Ontario with their peaceful flat landscapes and giant uninhabited lakes have been a summer destination for years and have also been favorite subjects of my paintings. It is a pleasure to sketch and be enveloped in the stillness of the woods, rocks and shimmering water. The works of Arthur Dove, Milton Avery and the Canadians, Lawren Harris and Jack Bush have helped me to develop my own interpretation of these beloved areas.
